Our Great God

Monday Reflection –  2017

Our Great God

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. Psalm 145:3

 Sing with me:

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear, now to his temple draw near,
Praise Him in glad adoration.

Psalm 145 is a beautiful psalm dedicated to the praise and worship of God. It affirms that God is worthy of our praise because of:

Who God is –

  1. a)God – the supreme and sovereign deity
  2. b)King – the one who sits on the throne with the glorious splendor of his kingdom. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and his dominion endures through all generations.
  3. c)Lord – master and ruler who takes care of his people

What God has done

  1. a)Mighty acts, wonderful and awesome works, great deeds
  2. b)Gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love
  3. c)Faithful to his promises, upholds those who fall and lifts up the bowed down
  4. d)Provides for all and satisfies our desires
  5. e)Righteous and loving
  6. f)Draws near to those who call, hears our cries and saves us
  7. g)Watches over his own and destroys the wicked

Such a God is great and greatly to be praised. There is no part of God’s nature that is not worthy of great praise. Praise is when the songs we sing contain substance and when our hearts are intensely fervent. Songs and hymns composed without thought or substance are of no worth, and tunes where no pains have been spent are beneath the dignity of divine adoration.  No chorus is too loud, no orchestra too large, no psalm too lofty for the lauding of the Lord of Hosts. God is great in all the perfections of his nature – wisdom, power, faithfulness, holiness, grace, and goodness.

Yet, as limited finite beings, we cannot even fathom God’s greatness. He is past finding out and therefore, his deserved praise is still above and beyond all that we can render to him. Our very words are limited and can never adequately describe God. However, we should not let this reality overwhelm us, but focus on offering to God our sincere praise through our entire lives. We bear in mind that those who worship God should worship him in spirit and in truth.

Join me in song again (by Chris Tomlin):

The splendor of the King, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice

He wraps himself in Light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice, trembles at His voice.

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God.

Age to age He stands, and time is in His hands
Beginning and the end, beginning and the end.

The Godhead Three in One, Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb, The Lion and the Lamb.

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God.

He’s the name above all names, and he’s worthy of our praise

And my heart will sing, how great is our God.

How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God.

Let’s recognize God’s greatness and his work in our midst each day, and let us not fail to give to God the praise that he so richly deserves. Let the praise not only come from our lips but let our whole lives reflect that of praise to God.

Till next week, give praise to our great God!
