For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to him. 1 Samuel
1:27
Oh what joy and excitement we experience when God answers our prayers favourably! When
we are assured that though the process and journey was long, God came through for us. When
we have experienced God answering our prayers, we have no choice but to shout ‘Hallelujah!!!’
Today’s text is a powerful and heartfelt verse that captures the deep emotions and gratitude of a
woman named Hannah. This verse is in the context of the story of Hannah, who was one of two
wives of Elkanah. She was barren and greatly distressed because she was unable to conceive a
child, which was considered a great shame and disgrace in ancient Hebrew culture. However,
Hannah continued to pray fervently to the Lord for a child.
In today’s Watchword, we see Hannah’s response after she has been blessed with a son, Samuel,
whom she had continuously prayed for. Her heart is overflowing with thankfulness for the child
that she had longed for, and she acknowledges that it is the Lord who has answered her prayers
and granted her the desire of her heart.
One of the key themes in this verse is the power of prayer and the faithfulness of God. Hannah’s
fervent prayers are evidence of her unwavering faith and belief in the power of God to intervene
in her life. Despite facing years of disappointment and anguish, she continues to trust in God and
remain faithful in her prayers. We see how God listens to the deep, honest grief of His people.
Hannah’s prayer changed from a private plea of desperation into a public testimony of God’s
faithfulness. This verse serves as a powerful reminder for believers to persevere in prayer, even
in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, knowing that God is faithful and hears our
cries.
Today’s text also illustrates the importance of recognizing and acknowledging God’s provision
and faithfulness. Hannah’s words reflect her complete dependence on God and her
acknowledgment that it is He who has blessed her with a child. She attributes her answered
prayer solely to the Lord, expressing her gratitude and awe at His goodness and mercy. Of note
is that in Hebrew, the root word for “ask” or “petition” (sha’al) appears multiple times in this
passage. Hannah acknowledges that Samuel—whose name sounds like “heard of God” or “asked
of God”—is literally the physical answer to what she requested.
Furthermore, 1 Samuel 1:27 highlights the transformative power of God’s intervention in the
lives of His people. Hannah’s joy and gratitude are palpable, and the birth of Samuel represents a
turning point in her life. This verse serves as a testament to God’s ability to bring about
miraculous change and fulfill the deepest desires of the human heart. It also serves as a source of
encouragement for those of us who may be experiencing our own seasons of longing and
waiting. What have we been praying about? What are we longing for? What are we waiting on
God for? Pray on!! May we be reminded that God is able to intervene and bring hope to
seemingly hopeless situations. The God who did it for Hannah, can and will do it for us,
according to His will and timing. Amen.
