For the Lord loves justice; he will not forsake his faithful ones. The righteous shall be kept
safe forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. Psalm 37: 28
Psalm 37 is a message of hope and encouragement for believers who may be facing difficult
circumstances, persecution, or the actions of the wicked. Psalm 37 was likely written during a
time of turmoil and unrest, as David addresses the issue of the prosperity of the wicked and the
suffering of the righteous. He encourages the readers to trust in God, commit their ways to Him,
and wait patiently for His deliverance. This Psalm is a reflection on the age-old question of why
the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous face hardships. It is a call to faith and obedience
in the midst of such challenges.
In today’s text, some key themes emerge:
1. Divine Justice: The verse begins with “For the Lord loves justice”, emphasizing God’s love
for justice and righteousness. It is a reassurance to the believers that God sees and cares about the
injustices we may be facing. This theme of divine justice runs throughout the entire Psalm, as
David encourages his people to trust in God’s timing and sovereignty, knowing that He will
ultimately make all things right.
2. God’s Faithfulness: “he will not forsake his faithful ones (saints)” highlights the faithfulness
and loyalty of God towards His people. This assurance is meant to bring comfort to the believers,
reminding us that no matter the circumstances, God will never abandon or forsake those who
belong to Him. The word “saints” denotes those who are set apart for God, symbolizing purity,
righteousness, and devotion to God. These are under God’s special care and protection.
3. The Preservation of the Righteous: “The righteous shall be kept safe forever” underscores
the promise of God to preserve and uphold the righteous for eternity. This is a powerful
statement of security and permanence for those who belong to God. It reflects the reality of
God’s unwavering protection and provision for His people, even in the face of adversity.
4. The Destruction of the Wicked: The verse concludes with “but the children of the wicked
shall be cut off”, pointing to the ultimate fate of those who oppose God and His ways. This
serves as a warning to the wicked, emphasizing that their actions will not go unpunished. It also
serves as a reminder to the believers that God will ultimately bring judgment upon the evildoers
and vindicate the righteous.
Today’s text is a powerful and comforting reminder of God’s love for justice, faithfulness to His
people, and ultimate victory over the wicked. It offers hope and assurance to believers, urging
that we trust in God’s sovereign rule and steadfast presence. It is a call to faith, obedience, and
perseverance in the face of adversity, knowing that God’s promises are sure and that He will
ultimately bring about justice and righteousness. We are reminded that God values justice and
will act on behalf of those who are faithful to Him. Amen.
